The Fyra is Ooni’s entry-level portable pizza oven and sells for just £249, but don’t confuse the low price with inferior quality – the Fyra is one of the best pizza ovens on the market.

Ooni is a multi-award-winning pizza oven designer, manufacturer and distributor that continuously innovates and improves its product range.

Kristian Tapaninaho and Darina Garland founded it in their quest to develop an affordable pizza oven for the masses.

The company was formed in 2012 (so they have been around for almost a decade) and was initially funded by Kickstarter money.

Their name was originally Uuni but changed to Ooni in 2018 due to different pronunciations of the former around the world.

What fuels does the Ooni Fyra use?

The Fyra can only be fuelled by wood pellets that are fed through a hopper at the rear of the unit. Wood pellets provide the authentic wood-smoked taste that is familiar with traditional pizzeria cooking.

Ooni provides resealable bags of wood pellets (in beech and oak); however, you are not limited to buying from the Ooni range (just ensure that you buy hardwood pellets rather than softwood, which tend to burn too quickly).

How durable is the Ooni Fyra?

The Fyra is constructed from powder-coated carbon steel, protecting against corrosion, dings, scratches and discolouration. However, it is not designed to be left outside all year round and should be stored inside during heavy rain or other adverse weather conditions.

How easy is it to set up the Ooni Fyra?

The Fyra can be set up in a just few minutes.

  1. After unpacking, the legs on the unit are extended before the fuel tray is inserted into the back.
  2. At the front, a small piece of metal that Ooni calls a ‘flame keeper’ is attached to the inside of the unit.
  3. Next, the chimney stack and hopper are twisted into place on the top
  4. Finally, the pizza stone is inserted and the door slotted into place.

Although this process is quick, Ooni does recommend that the Fyra is seasoned before first-time use, which involves heating the unit up to full temperature for 30mins before letting it cool and wiping down the inside with dry paper towels.


If sustainability is important to you, you’ll be happy to know that 96% of the packaging is recyclable, made of materials such as corrugated fibreboard, pulp trays (made from recycled newspapers) and biodegradable bags (made from plant-based materials). I believe that the only part of the packaging that is not environmentally friendly is the bubble wrap that is used to protect the pizza stone.

How easy is it to use the Ooni Fyra?

The Fyra is very simple to use.

  1. After installation, remove the chimney cap and open the chimney vent.
  2. Next, fill the fuel tray with wood pellets and add a firelighter to the top.
  3. Ignite the firelighter and replace the fuel tray.
  4. When the unit is producing a full flame, add more wood pellets to the top of the hopper.

How long does the Ooni Fyra take to heat up and cook pizza?

It will take about 15 minutes to get up to cooking temperature, and you should top up the hopper with wood pellets before you cook your first pizza (a full hopper provides about 15 minutes of burn time).

A pizza can be cooked in 1-2 minutes, however, opening the door to add/remove pizza does result in some heat loss, so it can take a few more minutes to get back up to cooking temperature again when the door is closed. Around three to four pizzas can be cooked from a full hopper of pellets (following a full hopper to get up to temperature).

Is the Ooni Fyra portable?

The Fyra only weighs 10Kg and has foldable legs, so it is very easy to move around and can easily be transported for days out at the beach or country parks.

What is the capacity of the Ooni Fyra?

The Fyra only has the capacity for one pizza at a time, and the maximum size pizza that can be cooked in it is 12″ (hence, why it is called the Ooni Fyra 12).

Does the Ooni Fyra come with any accessories?

The Fyra does not come with any accessories other than a 10″ cordierite pizza stone. For a pizza stone, this is relatively thin but is suitable for this model because of its smaller size.

Accessories are available from the Ooni store, and Ooni usually has deals for the Fyra plus a bundle of necessary accessories.

Do I need anything else to use the Ooni Fyra?

To use an Ooni Fyra, you will need to buy a pizza peel for transferring your pizza in and out of the oven and turning it around. You will also need to purchase wood pellets to fuel your pizza oven, and some people will also find firelighters helpful. Finally, you will also find a thermometer helpful so that you know when your oven has reached the optimal cooking temperature.


The Ooni Fyra is perfect for anyone that is buying their first pizza oven but does not want to spend too much to begin with.

It is also great as a portable unit to be used on days out or camping trips.

However, its limited capacity and issues with heat loss make it unsuitable for chefs that will be cooking for more significant numbers of people.
