About Ooni

Ooni is a multi-award winning pizza oven designer, manufacturer and distributor that continuously innovates and improves its product range.

It was founded by Kristian Tapaninaho and Darina Garland in their quest to develop an affordable pizza oven for the masses.

The company was formed in 2012 (so they have been around for almost a decade) and was originally funded by Kickstarter money.

Their name was originally Uuni, but changed to Ooni in 2018 due to different pronunciations of the former around the world.

What fuels does the Ooni Koda 16 use?

The Koda 16 burns propane gas to heat up the cooking chamber. There are no options for other fuels – if you want a multi-fuel model (both gas and wood) then the Karu 12 or Karu 16 are viable alternatives.

Gas-powered pizza ovens are typically easier to use because it is simpler to regulate the temperature using a control knob rather than managing a wood fire. In addition, they are easier to clean because they don’t leave any ash behind. However, they do not produce the classic taste of wood-fired pizza.

How durable is the Ooni Koda 16?

The Koda 12 is constructed from powder-coated carbon steel, which provides protection against corrosion as well as dings, scratches and discolouration. However, it is not designed to be left outside all year round and should be stored inside during heavy rain or other adverse weather conditions.

How easy is it to set up the Ooni Koda 16?

The Koda 16 can be set up in just a few minutes.

  1. After unpacking, the legs on the unit are extended
  2. Next, the pizza stone is inserted into the cooking chamber
  3. Finally, the gas regulator is connected to the propane gas tank valve

Although this process is quick, Ooni does recommend that the Koda is seasoned before first-time use, which involves heating the unit up to full temperature for 30mins before letting it cool and wiping down the inside with dry paper towels. This burns off any oils or coatings that are still present from the manufacturing process.

How easy is it to use the Ooni Koda 16?

The Koda 16 is very simple to use.

  1. After installation, open the valve of the propane gas tank to allow gas to flow into the oven
  2. Push in the control knob on the front of the Koda and turn it anti-clockwise until it clicks and the burner ignites
  3. Keep the control knob held down for another 5 seconds or so before releasing
  4. Adjust the heat with the control knob until you reach the desired temperature

How long does the Ooni Koda 16 take to heat up and cook pizza?

It will usually take about 20 minutes to get up to the cooking temperature – you should check the temperature of the pizza stone with an infrared thermometer and if the temperature is 400-500 degrees Celsius, you are ready to cook your first pizza.

By comparison, the Ooni Fyra, Koda 12 and Karu 12 and 16 take around 15 minutes to reach optimum temperature. This is because the Fyra, Koda 12 and Karu 12 are smaller units and therefore take less time to heat up. And the Karu 16 is a premium model.

A pizza can be cooked in 1-2 minutes.

Is the Ooni Koda 16 portable?

The Ooni Koda weighs 18.2Kg. Although it has foldable legs and can be carried by one person, it is quite bulky and for safety reasons should be carried too far single-handed. In addition, remember that you will also need a propane gas tank, which will add to the weight.

The Ooni Koda 16 is a decent gas-powered pizza oven and ideal for someone that wants to cook homemade pizza but prefers the ease and cleanliness of gas over the traditional taste of wood-fired ovens.

With the capacity to make pizzas up to 16″ in size and a cooking time of just a couple of minutes, the Koda 16 is great for entertaining guests at pizza parties.
